Volunteering as a Magistrate – Personal and Professional Benefits

Workshop overview

Have you ever considered contributing to your community in a meaningful and impactful way? This session introduces the role of a volunteer magistrate—a unique opportunity to support the justice system while developing valuable professional skills.

Magistrates play a vital role in local courts, hearing cases as part of a bench of three and making decisions that directly affect individuals and communities. You do not need a law degree or legal background to apply. Full training is provided, along with mentoring and ongoing support. What matters most are skills such as active listening, sound judgement, calmness under pressure, and the ability to work collaboratively.

The personal and professional benefits of volunteering as a magistrate include:

  • Strengthening decision‑making and analytical skills
  • Developing confidence in public speaking and managing formal settings
  • Enhancing negotiation and teamwork abilities
  • Gaining experience that complements professional careers
  • An opportunity to develop active listening, sound judgement, calmness under pressure, and effective collaboration
